- The focus on water is interesting, or rather just how detailed Herbert goes into in his worldbuilding. The religion of the Fremen is so rich and detailed, e.g. the focus on water. When Paul cries at the funeral of Jamis (not sure how it’s spelt) they revere him for giving the gift of his water to the dead. Comparing this to Hyperion, which I think also had really good worldbuilding, I think Dune is a lot more subtle about it. The story, at least the part I’m in now since the battle just happened, is a lot more subdued. Perhaps the nature of Hyperion’s mini stories vs. Dune being a big story allowed Hyperion to have faster pacing, and that’s what I’m picking up on?
- It picked up a lot during the ending, I guess due to there being more action sequences. Overall the book is definitely a slow burn compared to Hyperion or Starship Troopers or Ender’s Game. Similar to The Three-Body Problem in pacing, but that’s not a bad thing.
- Shashank mentioned that the Dune series is an indictment on religion, or at least the blind fanaticism that can be associated with it. I can see that, as in the book Paul is trying to stop the jihad of his visions but knows it will happen anyways, the myth of him has overtaken the reality of his character.
- I don’t really have much thoughts on the book other than that it was good, a fun listen, and that the worldbuilding is very in-depth. Perhaps I should read some other people’s analyses and see if I have more to say, as I definitely had a lot to say for The Three-Body Problem.
